Legal Hotline

The purpose of the program was not to replace a school district’s legal firm but to provide superintendents and their designees an opportunity to contact attorneys who specialize in school law for a quick legal response not requiring extensive research and at a substantially reduced cost. The firm of Britton, Smith, Peters & Kalail Co., L.P.A. was chosen by OSC for this service.

The rates are as follows: 10 hours=$1,500; 15 hours=$2,175; 20 hours=$2,800.

There is not a Council participation fee associated with this program.

Following are the specifics included with the cost:

• A day-long “Legal Update” seminar on current issues
• Helpful legal resource materials.
• Confirming correspondence will follow all inquiries.
• The services provided will consist of telephone consultation, incidental research and correspondence, and provide 24-hour turn-around replies. The attorney will advise the school district whenever the services being requested are not covered by the agreement.
• The firm will maintain separate time records for each participating school district and will identify the caller. Districts surpassing the selected number of hours will be billed directly by the firm at regular firm rates.
• The length of the contract is 12 months effective July 1
