The purpose of the program is not to replace a school district’s legal firm but to provide superintendents and their designees an opportunity to contact attorneys who focus exclusively on school law for a quick legal response not requiring extensive research and at a substantially reduced cost. The firm of Britton, Smith, Peters & Kalail Co., L.P.A. has been chosen by OSC for this service.

OSC member districts may select the following prepaid options:
up to 10 hours of consultation for $1,500;
up to 15 hours of consultation for $2,175; or
up to 20 hours of consultation for $2,800.

There is not a Council participation fee associated with this program.

Following are the specifics included with the cost:

  • A half-day “Legal Update” seminar on current issues
  • Helpful legal resource materials.
  • The services provided will consist of telephone consultation, incidental research and correspondence, and provide 24-hour turn-around replies. The attorney will advise the school district whenever the services being requested are not covered by the agreement.
  • The firm will maintain separate time records for each participating school district and will identify the caller. Districts will receive a monthly accounting statement for legal services indicating the number of hours used/remaining in the selected block.  Districts surpassing the selected number of hours will be billed directly by the firm at regular firm rates.
  • The length of the contract is 12 months effective July 1
